Teaching Independence at home
The Darnell School combines classroom instruction with a two-hour weekly home-training component. Darnell’s educators work with the family to identify those skills that are needed for the student to fully participate in the family’s home life. Our educators travel to the home each week to provide instruction and support the family as the student moves toward independence.
Home skills can include:
- Showering and bathing
- Cooking
- Behavioral self-control, both in the home and out in the community
- Working
- House cleaning
- Leisure activities, both in the home and out in the community
- Self-management
