There is overwhelming evidence of the effectiveness of applied behavior analysis as a method for educating and treating children and young adults with autism and developmental delays. When students participate in high quality and properly administered ABA programs significant progress can be seen. It truly is the gold standard!
Ideally, an ABA program is overseen by a seasoned BCBA with expertise in the area of treatment. The BCBA will begin by developing an understanding of the skill deficits and behaviors of concern. A thorough comprehensive assessment provides further information that can guide treatment planning and intervention. A sensitive data collection system allows for progress monitoring and adjustment to the intervention.
Applied Behavior Analysis at Darnell
Here at the Darnell School, our highly qualified staff work with each family to assist them in developing a vision of the skills their child can develop that will support greater independence as they grow to adulthood. We then develop and implement a plan to promote this skill development. This plan will address a broad range of skill areas. In addition to academic skills we train communication and social skills, self management, independent living skills and vocational skills.
To assure that skills generalize, training occurs across environments. This may include the community and home setting. Our home parent training component allows us to address specific family concerns that may not be seen in the school setting. Daily data collection and analysis is used for progress monitoring and to make adjustments in interventions.
Our students learn, grow and become more independent. As they do, we celebrate their successes and continue to provide more challenging opportunities for learning.
